Nathan Harrison | Liv's Husband/Seeker of Justice

Just because you met someone at 15 and have been married to them for 20 years does NOT make you and expert on them. This interview was shocking in more ways than one. Every reaction I have is in real time and absolutely authentic. Honestly, I love that after being Nathan’s girl for over 26 years I still learn new things about him.

Interviewing my husband for this podcast was something I both looked forward to and dreaded. For one thing, Nathan is my complete and polar opposite. We have always lived on far ends of the personality spectrum. There has rarely been a time that we have been in public when someone hasn’t said, “So how exactly do you two work”? Frankly, we don’t know ourselves. We have spent the majority of our lives together as a couple and we still don’t exactly know why we work. It is one thing to marry your opposite, it’s a whole other thing to marry your extreme opposite.

The most surprising part of this podcast was not only what I learned about Nathan, but just to hear how far we have come and grown as a couple. We get really honest and very real. We are open about us individually and as a couple. Nathan lays down some incredible truth and I announce so big projects for 2021.
My favorite part is how Nathan addresses my mental illness. He discusses what his perspective as a husband has been with (at times) a very ill wife. Nathan doesn’t shy away from what a spouse should do and how he has felt and what he has faced in our marriage, especially in the last few years as I have been in treatment for both extremely severe anxiety and severe depression.

For us as a married couple we have never faced the darkness and challenges we have this last year. Since 2017 we found ourselves on a path, I sent us on that was unhealthy and damaging. This break we have been gifted in 2020 has brought our marriage the much-needed time to reflect, talk, cry, mend, heal, and forgive. In every way 2020 has been the hardest year we have faced. On the other hand, 2020 gave us the space to find one another in a new and stronger way. We are finally moving forward. This is absolutely because Nathan is the most honest, ethical, and good man I have ever met. He is worth your time. His story of courage and years as a leader in justice will not only inspire you but lead you to say, “NATHAN. IS. EXTRAORDINARY.”

Writing in school is either something people LOVE or LOATHE. You could make the argument that it depends on the writing assignment. Is the writing a narrative? Poetry? A How-To? Is it a persuasive piece or an opinion piece that would be in the newspaper? There are so many different types of ways to convey the written word. Now add social media.

Today it is easy to go “viral”. You can be an absolute no one and post something on the internet, get a snack, and see your post circulating the World Wide Web. Ok, maybe it isn’t easy, but it is definitely a possibility. The real question is, why? Why do some photos, stories, quotes, videos, Tik Toks, products gain popularity and others don’t?

As much as I would LOVE the decoder ring on this quandary…the big secret is…no one knows. Sure, there is some science behind what sticks and gets shared, but for the most part there really is not a formula until you strike gold. My guest struck gold early in 2020, just as the world shut down her world busted open like a pinata. And the kicker is…she had NO idea what was about to happen on her computer screen.

Vicki has spent the last 30 years traveling the globe inspiring, motivating, and consulting with some of the biggest executives on the planet. Remember those amazing science promises the world is waiting for right now? Vicki has been the speaker who has motivated the National & International teams of the CDC, United Way, AstraZeneca, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Points of Light, Audubon Society, American Bar Association, Head Start, Sigma Kappa, and my personal favorite (because I met her there) the Junior League…just to name a few.

The moment you meet Vicki Clark you know you are in the presence of GREATNESS. If you have been following me, Liv Harrison, on social media there has definitely been an uptick in my posting about my weight-loss journey. My story is extreme. My highest recorded weight by medical professionals was 458 pounds. In October 2020 I posted that I was finally in the 170’s and no longer considered morbidly obese. However, this journey has taken 15 years to achieve and is not over.

For the first time I am addressing publicly how I got to that extreme weight and what I did to overcome it. The story is long, because let’s be honest, to get to that ginormous of a number and to lose 286 pounds, it’s gonna take a minute to make it through. And since I am being honest…I get really really real. There are things I have never shared and I share in ways I never have. It gets raw, honest, ugly, and very human.
This is me.
This is my huge weight loss journey.
I ask that you listen with human ears and with a human heart.

Mary Lenaburg | Be Brave in the Scared

Normally I begin with some cute story or roundabout way of introducing a guest, but there is no need to “hide the lead”. My guest is loved for one simple true and sincere reason…she is undeniably loveable. What makes her so well liked, loved, admired, revered, sought after, and adored is her uncanny relatability. You would be hard pressed to find someone more transparent and real. You won’t find them; she is the real-deal. She is as authentic as they come. I’m talking about Mary Lenaburg of course.

If Mary’s authenticity doesn’t win you over her story certainly will. Most people are aware of the immense tragedy Mary has endured. She has never held back what sadness she has faced in her life. Rarely does Mary get asked beyond just her normal stories that she is always asked to share. That’s because her experience is unique and her storytelling skills are fierce. My goal was to get a few unknown or lesser known stories out of the unofficial-official “Queen of Wisdom”. I am thrilled to say that goal was achieved.

Mary is everything you think she is and everything you want her to be. You always leave loving her more and you have no idea how that was even possible. To call her a friend is a gift. To know her heart is a honor. To love her is a privilege.

Coach Anthony Simon | College Basketball Dreams to Best Selling Author

Having a dream since you were a kid is something many of us had hoped to retain. Backpacks and Trapper Keepers filled with doodles and stickers and notes to friends about who we would grow up to be as adults were common in my generation. My backpack had my Young Astronauts patch attached to it. I remember wading through candy wrappers and pencil erasers at the bottom of my bag to find a note I had written my best friend about my adult sized dreams. She wanted to be a mom and I wanted to float in space. In a lot of ways, we both have accomplished those aspirations.

What happens when you are a teenager and you actually achieve your number one goal? One day you’re walking through locker lined hallways and the next you have signed to play on a basketball team you have admired. Anthony Simons knows this scenario all to well. He was the kid with the Kobe Bryant dream to play professional basketball. The first step towards that is playing on the college level. So, what happened? Why is Anthony known as Coach Anthony? And how at the age of 21 does he already have 3 published books that have nothing to do basketball backboards? This motivational speaker’s story is one filled with family, dreams, sacrifice, and heartbreak.

Cana Harrison | Liv's daughter's reflection on the quarantine & election

Not many kids have done what Cana Harrison has successfully done…survived as Liv Harrison’s only daughter! At 10 Cana has more of an adult outlook on life than most the adults I have met. The moment you meet Cana you are impressed with her vocabulary, her level of articulation, and the way she drifts in and out of adult and kid conversation.

Cana has had anything but a normal life. By the time she was 9 (she is only 10) she had been to all 50 states. She has been on more stages than she can count. And she understands what it means when she hears, “quiet please! Mommy is recording!” Her everyday is anything by ordinary. However, she easily wins the heart of every adult that encounters her within the first five minutes. You can tell she’s a special kid. And not because I have met her. The privilege I have in her life is the fact that I made her, but she is unique because of who she was placed on this earth to become. Her poise and “little-kid-explanations” go hand and hand. With that remember that she is 10 and still under the influence of adults, and not just me and my husband. Cana is a listener. She observes and takes in the adult world she lives in and loves. As a mother I ask that you listen with gentle ears. As a human I ask that you listen. This girl has a lot of wonderful to say.

Who do you do know who lives out of their car, drives around talking about Jesus, writes books, and knows ALL the things about ALL the Saints? If you said, MEG HUNTER-KILMER then you are correct!

In the Catholic world Meg is known for living outside of the box and being the answer gal for all things pertaining to the Saints. However, there is a lot more to Meg than just being a human encyclopedia about people who the Catholic Church have declared in Heaven. That is why today’s interview is fantastic because Meg talks about things and goes to places that is out of the box for her. When someone has dedicated their life to exploring certain subjects and then people only want to hear about that it can be challenging to share outside those expectations. Meg does this with grace and ease.
If you think you know Meg I challenge you to meet her again. You will learn things about her that will surprise you. And if you don’t know who this self-proclaimed “Hobo for Christ” is, then I invite you to get comfy, this is a great story that just gets better.

Seattle Seahawk to Lifechanging Educator | Coach Robert Morrison

Being the first at something and somewhere is never easy. However, it can absolutely prepare you for a life of independence like nothing else. Personally, I always thought being the oldest prepared me in ways to face the world. There was no one else to blame and you had to pave the way…every…single…time. But being an only child AND the first at almost EVERYTHING, well that’s just extraordinary!

Coach Robert Morrison is exactly the independent and strong man you would expect him to be. His life has been anything but simple and ordinary. His story is filled with playing in the NFL to coaching high school students to earning 2 different Master degrees in Education. In his professional career as a teacher and administrator he walked on EACH campus as the FIRST black educator. At EACH of the 7 campuses! He truly changed the education culture in the state of Texas. His reputation is like that of a movie. This incredible man has positively influenced the lives of over 50,000 students and their families. You won’t want to stop listening to his stories…and you are going to need a Kleenex. I cry for the first time while recording. He is a life changer.

Meghan Rossi | From Broadcast Anchor to Entrepreneur

Fine. Let’s get it out of the way. Meghan’s husband is famous. He is an incredible actor with iconic roles on his resume. Anyone who has seen Sons of Anarchy (Juice) or Luke Cage (Shades) knows who Theo Rossi is and they love him! But I know Meghan as the girl next door who grew up to be a fantastic Broadcast anchor with a heart of gold. Meghan has always been a “go-getter”. When I knew her as a teenager, she was the girl who seemed to have it all figured out, and for the most part she did. She knew who she was and she knew what she wanted to do with her life. It always included being a broadcast journalist. What she didn’t realize was how she would use those skills in a completely different way, “off the air”.

However, the story for this Texas darling is in her relationship with her husband Theo. It is not only inspiring to hear how they met, but their love story is one I haven’t heard happening in this century. I am sure it has many times, but it was such an old tale it felt new again. For me though it was the intentional choices she made BEFORE meeting Theo that really moved my heart.

The real elephant in the room during this recording is how Meghan addresses the News. As in the media that produces and broadcasts the news. This is not an episode that goes into today’s controversies with the News. This episode also will not try to sway or blame or curse at anyone or anything. Rather, it is a refreshing conversation from a perspective of someone who dedicated her life to being trained in journalism. Meghan beautifully explains how she always wanted to tell stories and how she now uses those skills in ways she never would have imagined. She does this all while being the mom of two little boys with her cutie of a famous husband that she shares her life with in Texas.

Apparition Expert Fr. Edward Looney

Who hasn’t heard of Lourdes, Fatima, and Guadalupe? Even Zac Efron in the new Netflix series, Down to Earth, dedicated almost an entire episode to the miraculous water found in Lourdes, France. To Catholics we know of these pilgrimage sites as Marian Apparition sites. These are considered “Landmarks of Hope” (I have a NEW project about these sites listed below, you are going to love it!)

Miracles occurred here. Documented ones. This is not an easy thing to prove or get Vatican approval. To be considered a Marian Apparition site it takes YEARS and work, evidence, and specific qualifications. There are many sites around the world claiming to have hosted miracles, but few have been proven and given the “seal of approval’ by the authority of the Catholic Church. Zac actually explains all of this and the process really well, in fact if you have Netflix you should watch that specific episode for a fantastic explanation by someone who is NOT Catholic. Which of course I personally love!

So, why then is there not a lot of pomp and circumstance for the ONLY Marian Apparition approved in the USA? Why does no one talk about it? Is it because it is so old it has been forgotten? Perhaps it is because it is SO NEW no one really knows of it. I would venture to say that 2010 is pretty new…for anything. That’s right as in TEN years ago! The Vatican approved this AMERICAN Marian Apparition in 2010 in…wait for it…WISCONSIN! Yes, it is just as holy/important as Lourdes, Fatima, & Guadalupe, and it is in our own backyard! (I’m feeling a Dorothy of Oz vibe for this story). The only problem is it is just not as popular.

Here is where it gets crazy…the leading author on ALL things around this apparition is a 31-year-old priest who has been an Instagram follower of mine for 3 years! He has numerous books, a Twitter account, Podcast, and obviously Facebook & Instagram. What is really crazy is I was there in 2012 (as in where the apparition took place) and bought a ton of books…HIS BOOKS! (Y’all, I had NO idea about any of this until recently.)

Hold on…even more amazing…this Friday, OCTOBER 9th is the FEAST DAY for this incredible apparition! Is God’s timing incredible or what? However, the most fascinating part of it all is the man behind the books. Wait until you meet Fr. Edward Looney…you are just going to love him.

From Country Singer Dreams to Grammy Award Winner

Every kid in Texas has heard Country music at least once. Ok in reality they are raised on it like brisket and Dr. Pepper. If you are blessed enough to live in Houston as a child then you also fall in love with the Rodeo, which just so happens to feature a lot of Country music. Basically, you learn to love it and the you dream to sing it on stage. This is exactly how my guest today found himself in one of the best music schools in the USA, with a dream the size of Texas to be a Country singer. Naturally he became one of the soloists for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Scott has now been on the roster for the Met Opera for 10 years.

Scott’s story about his road to the opera by way of Denton, TX is filled with turns he never saw coming. What is not a surprise is that he was born to sing. Since he was a child Scott was performing on the stage with ease. He wasn’t even challenged when he continued to find himself winning national competitions at the collegiate level. Scott could sing. What he didn’t plan on was singing Opera for a career. What he planned on even less than that was winning a Grammy for it! In fact, Scott didn’t even know that was possible. And the story he has to share about his big Grammy winning moment is absolutely priceless.

Make sure to tune in to this one for a classical story told with a Texas twang. And when you hear what he shares about the greats like Pavarotti and Rita Moreno, well you just might bust your britches.

She's back!

Relaunching my podcast was not something I was sure I was going to do fifty days ago. I stepped away from this medium for exactly that many days to have a deep reevaluation in who I am and what I was being called by God to do. Spoiler alert: I’m relaunching the podcast. So, the next decision to be made was who do I interview? Even though I already have completed interviews I felt the need to make sure my guest could navigate and address my unexpected “radio silence” for my audience. Then quite literally when I was in prayer, I had a revelation, for me to be the guest. I needed to tell this part of my story.

So, let me begin by saying that this episode is extremely real, raw, and vulnerable. I sat down and recorded it in one take. What I am sending out into the world is untouched. Every emotion and reaction and realization that you hear happened in real time. There was no script. I would argue that there wasn’t a formalized plan. I thought tremendously about it and prayed and then leapt. To say I am nervous is an understatement. This is absolutely a step out in complete faith. My husband, therapist, producer, and manager have all listened and given me the green light to release it as it was recorded. Nathan, my husband, said, “it is your most vulnerable work yet”. If you already follow me on social media you are probably just as curious as I was to know that I could be any more vulnerable.

So, friends, this is me. Very real and very raw and very humbled. I pray you listen with open ears and hearts. And that something shared in these 60 minutes is not only relatable, but worthy of your time. As always, thank you for being here. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your encouragement. And thank you for your love. You are extraordinary.

Katie not only speaks to thousands of teens she is also the female face of Encounter. A young adult ministry housed by Steubenville. What captures most of Katie’s audiences is her ability to touch the feminine genius in a way that feels like home. She wrote a book about how she prepared for marriage and that has led her in high demand in women’s, Mothers, marriage, and mother/daughter ministries.

Kathryn Whitaker, Lover of BBQ & Sweet Tea

Sure. Texas is known for barbeque, cattle, land, cowboys, football, and BIG personalities! What most
people don’t know is just how different each part of Texas is from each other. The cities are filled with
restaurants, museums, theater, and sporting events. The rural spots are packed with hometown
parades, fishing holes, mom & pop establishments, and everybody knowing everybody. Something else
that is shocking is the dialect of Texan that is spoken throughout the state. A true Texan can hear an
accent and tell you where someone is from in the state. East Texas does not sound like West Texas and
people from the cities often have no accent at all.

This week features my favorite West Texas gal, Kathryn Whitaker. From the moment she says anything, I
feel at home. Not because I’m from West Texas, but because I went to college there. We did a “freaky
Friday”. I left the city and went to the panhandle and she left the panhandle and went to…well College
Station. Pour a glass of sweet tea (although I love unsweet), crack open a Dr. Pepper, or just get a nice
cold one out of the fridge.

This conversation will lead you deeper into the charm that everyone loves
about Kathryn. The best part is everyone is gonna learn something about her that they didn’t already
know…I guarantee it.

My guest is Geeta Raj is the smart woman that partnered with “White House Sleepover” guy (David) to create The Global Sleepover. Not only does she have a BA in Creative Writing and can speak Hindi, Urdu, and Spanish. She also holds a Masters in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University in Washington, DC. (Who even knew that was an option to get in school?). Watching the TV show Green Acres (1965-1971) definitely gave a sneak peek into what plotlines reality television would choose in years to come. What could be more of a dumpster fire to watch than a bougie-hoity-toity-debutant moving to a farm!?!?!?! How would television ever top that concept??? Oh, they will and they have…but at the time this drastic lifestyle change seemed to capture the audiences of that time. Not to mention the theme song is crazy catchy!

The story of a city girl moving to a farm did become the reality of Haley Stewart. She willingly left comfort behind to discover the magic that only the rural life can produce. Her tales of small quarters and non-plumbing will have you jumping in a SUV heading towards the nearest Starbucks! Or you just might hear some pretty profound lessons that are applicable to wherever you are living your life. Haley is a blogger, author, speaker, and podcaster. She brings a lightness to the current quarantine situation and a reality that…wow…it really could be worse. But the question is would it really or in the end are we blessed?

Actor Turned Pastor Markus Lloyd

There are just some conversations that take longer to have and this is one of those. Grabbing a cup of coffee and carving out time to sit and discuss face to face with a friend is something many of us are craving. There is a longing to connect via discussion with someone you know who knows you and not just from what they gathered on the internet. Childhood/teenage friendships that survive into adulthood truly offer a unique position of familiarity. As an adult it is comforting to reconnect with past friends who knew you in your most pure form before being jaded by responsibility.

Markus is a friend that you could not see for years and slip right back into a level of comfort you forgot existed. Even though he has lived a “glamourous life” of being an actor in LA with a super famous best friend and a Broadway award winning sister, it does not matter. Markus is all too familiar with the life he left in LA and the perks of fame and fortune. His conscious decision to plant roots back in Texas and live his life grounded in his work and family was not something he casually pursued. Markus knew as a black man married to a white woman with biracial children in Texas, he would not have a linear path to happiness. Part of the work he has found so rewarding is with Threaded. For the last few years Markus has been providing a platform for conversations about racial issues to occur amongst different groups in his community. The national conversation that is happening currently is one he gently navigates with tremendous ease. He has found a way to maintain his talent of acting and entertainment while honoring true personal success.

Olympic Gold Medalist Chad Hedrick

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics might be cancelled, but an Olympian’s heart burns as bright as the legendary Olympic torch. Chad Hedrick is an Olympic 5000m Ice Speed Skating Legend. In 2006, at the Turin Olympic Games, Chad received the FIRST GOLD MEDAL for the USA! What makes this accomplishment more impressive than that is he did not grow up skating on the ice. Picture your favorite roller rink and that one kid that was faster than any other, that is Chad.

This Texas boy who could inline roller skate better than any person in the world decided to take his skills to the ice. He traded roller skates for blades of glory. But this is not the story that defines Chad. The real story is what happened moments after he grabbed the Gold. His life was forever changed, and not for obvious reasons.

The importance of storytelling has gotten lost in the desire to have the perfected social media feed. More conversations seem to be happening “online” rather than in person.
